Al-Rayyan are taking part in the FIVB Club World Championship for the third time, after having finished 5th in 2012 and runners-up in 2014 following a defeat in the final to Russia's Belogorie Belgorod in the same venue where they play this year.
Founded in 1968, Al-Rayyan have won nine Qatar League titles - their latest in the 2017-18 season, in addition to numerous Emir Cup and Crown Prince Cup titles.
Internationally, Al-Rayyan registered their first major success in 2000, winning the Arab Cup-Winners' Cup 2011 and followed up with gold at the 2011 Gulf Club Championship. They have also claimed back-to-back titles in the latest two Arab Club Championships.
They have been runners-up twice in the Asian Club Championships in 2013 and 2014. This year in the continental competition Al-Rayyan picked up the bronze medal after beating India's Chennai Spartans in straight sets in the third-place playoff.
